How to Apply Minoxidil: A Practical, Label-First Guide
How to apply minoxidil as the label directs: preparing your scalp, applying the right amount, what to expect, possible side effects and safe storage.

Minoxidil is a topical product made to be applied to the scalp. Like any product of this kind, it works best when it is used exactly as directed and consistently. This guide explains the general steps, but the label and the leaflet in your pack always come first. If anything here differs from them, follow the pack.
Before you begin
Read the label and leaflet fully before your first use. Check:
- The strength and who it is for. Different strengths are made for different people, so make sure yours suits you.
- Who should not use it. The leaflet lists people who should not use the product, such as those under a certain age, and situations where you should speak to a doctor first.
- Warnings. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before using it if you have a heart or blood-pressure condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, take other medicines, or have irritated or broken skin on your scalp.
- If you are unsure, ask a pharmacist for advice before you start.
Prepare your scalp
- Wash your hands.
- Make sure your scalp and hair are clean and completely dry, unless the label tells you otherwise.
- Part your hair so that you can see the skin in the area you are treating.
How to apply it
- Measure the dose on the label. Use only the amount the pack directs, using the dropper or spray provided. Using more does not work faster and can increase the chance of side effects.
- Apply it to the scalp, not just the hair, in the area the label describes.
- Spread it with your fingertips across the area. Avoid running it over your forehead, ears or neck.
- Wash your hands straight afterwards. The product should not get on other parts of your body.
- Let it dry fully before you style your hair, wear a hat or lie down on a pillow.
How often, and for how long
Use it at the times and for the length of time the pack directs. Keep to the same routine each day, because skipping applications is the most common reason people are disappointed. Results vary from person to person and take time, and some people see no change. We cannot promise any particular result. If you are unsure whether it is working, speak to a pharmacist or doctor rather than increasing the amount.
If you miss an application, carry on with your normal routine at the next time. Do not double up.
Possible side effects
Some people notice dryness, itching or mild irritation of the scalp. If irritation continues, stop using the product and speak to a pharmacist or doctor.
Stop using it and seek medical advice straight away if you experience dizziness, a fast or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, swelling of the hands or feet, or any other symptom the leaflet lists as a reason to stop.
Handling and storage
- Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
- Keep the cap on and store it as the label says, away from heat and direct sunlight.
- Check whether your product is flammable. If the label warns about it, keep it away from flames and heat until it is dry.
- Avoid contact with the eyes. If it gets in your eyes, rinse them thoroughly with plenty of water and seek advice if irritation continues.
Common mistakes
- Using more than the label says. Stick to the measured dose.
- Applying to a wet scalp. Follow the label, which usually says to apply to a dry scalp.
- Skipping days. Consistency matters.
- Ignoring the leaflet's warnings. Read the section on when to stop and when to ask for advice.
- Touching the product afterwards. Wash your hands every time.
- Combining it with other scalp products without checking. If you also use a dermaroller, ask a pharmacist how to fit the two together.

Frequently asked questions
How long does minoxidil take to show a difference?
It varies, and it takes time. Follow the label for how long to use it, and speak to a pharmacist or doctor if you are unsure whether it is working.
Should I apply it to a wet or dry scalp?
Apply it to a clean, completely dry scalp unless the label tells you otherwise.
Can I use minoxidil and a dermaroller together?
Ask a pharmacist before combining them. Skin that has just been rolled can react more strongly to products, so do not apply it straight after rolling unless a healthcare professional says you can.
What should I do if my scalp becomes irritated?
Stop using it. If the irritation does not settle, speak to a pharmacist or doctor.
Can I wash my hair after applying it?
Follow the leaflet for how long to leave the product on the scalp before washing. Do not wash it off too soon.
